According to the 2011 census, around 2.63 million native speakers use Sambalpuri as their prime language and use it for daily conversations. Most of these speakers are from Odisha (mostly in Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Subarnapur, Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Boudh, and Anugul districts ).
