Utkal Divas: Celebrating the Formation and Legacy of Odisha Utkal Divas, also known as Odisha Day, is a state holiday celebrated annually on April 1st in the Indian state of Odisha. The day commemorates the formation of the state of Odisha, which was formerly known as Orissa, as a separate province on April 1st, 1936. Prior to this, the region of Odisha was part of the Bengal Presidency during the British Raj. However, the people of Odisha, who have a distinct culture, language, and history, had been demanding a separate identity and representation for many years. The movement for the formation of a separate state gained momentum in the 1920s and 1930s under the leadership of great social reformers and freedom fighters like Utkal Gourav Madhusudan Das, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati, and Pandit Nilakantha Das.
